Foods Your Dog Should Never Eat

March 21, 2018

We are all guilty of sneaking a bite of our human food to our pups! Who can resist those big eyes and doggie smile? Well, sometimes it can be dangerous for your dog- it can depend on what it is and even what is in it. I always research what my dog can have before giving him a piece, because I love to share but don’t want to make him sick…or even kill him! Here is a list of foods that are dangerous for your dog.

Sweets, sugary foods and drinks and anything containing Xylitol.
Have you ever had a dog cake or cookies made, taste them, and it wasn’t sweet? I have! There’s a reason for it. Dog’s bodies cannot process certain amounts and types of sugars like humans can. Candies, sweets, gum, toothpaste, diet foods, and much more are sweetened with xylitol which is toxic to dogs. It can cause your dog's blood sugar to drop and can also cause liver failure. If ingesting too much or consistently over time, liver failure can happens in just a few days. Just stick to dog treats!

Garlic and Onions.
Keep these away for your pups! Any form of garlic or onions is very poisonous to dogs. Some dogs foods contain very small amounts of garlic to help keep fleas away but if your dogs eats too much of that food, it can also make them sick. These foods kill your dogs red blood cells, causing anemia.

Grapes and Raisins.
These are not good for treats as some may think! Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. And even just a small amount can make a dog sick. Continuous vomiting is a bad sign and within a day, your dog can get weak and depressed. Steer clear!!

Yes, unfortunately too many puppuccinos can be bad for your dog! Ice cream, milk, and any dairy products should be kept to a minimum. It can cause diarrhea and other digestive problems. Dairy can also provoke food allergies, which can cause your dog to be itchy.

Most nuts can make your dog sick. Walnuts, Macadamia Nuts, Pecans, and Pistachio Nuts can give your dog an upset stomach and gastrointestinal issues. Macadamia Nuts, being the worst, are toxic and can even lead to death.

Almost everyone knows this one! And how unfortunate for dogs right?! Dogs cannot have chocolate because it contains theobromine. All types of chocolate are bad, with dark and unsweetened being the most potent. It can cause vomiting, diarrhea, heart problems, tremors, seizures, and even death.

Alcohol and Caffeine.
Alcohol has the same effect on dogs as it does on humans. But it takes a lot less for dogs. This is the same with caffeine. Even if food contains alcohol or caffeine- it is a no! Caffeine and alcohol can be fatal.
So before feeding your pup some human food, make sure it is not on this list! Always research what is in your dog food and human food before giving it to them. It is better to be safe than sorry!
