How to feed senior dogs?

November 29, 2018

Hi Ruffers! When dogs reach 7 years old they are considered seniors, this means, they are older dogs. At this stage of their lives, it is essential that they begin to change their habits, as well as their diet. One of the suggestions of veterinarians is to completely change their eating habits as their metabolism begins to ask for more or less intake of certain vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. It is very important that you start giving them supplements or vitamins since you will help them to counteract heart and digestive problems.

This change depends on the age, breed, and weight of each dog, which is why it is essential that a veterinarian is in charge of making the changes.

Generally, what a dog needs more is the consumption of proteins, fibers, antioxidants, vitamins (A, C) and minerals, and fatty acids such as Omega 3.

A healthy diet for your dog is conformed with fortified food with vitamins and fatty acids like Omega 3. There are some dog food brands that offer special food for this dogs, so it's recommended to consume them and in some cases, they need to be complete with extra medicines.

On the other hand, there are products that are no longer necessary to be consumed, as they can cause problems in their health, the most common are foods with high levels of calories, sodium and phosphorus, an example of foods that contain this type of nutrients are legumes, nuts, dairy products, fish and meat.

As always, before making any changes we recommend you to go with the veterinarian to assess your dog and determine in an appropriate way the best options for its health and development.

Have a pawsome day!
